This week I say goodbye to my job of 14+ years to start a new professional journey (CV has the details). Throughout the many years serving students, I’ve had the privilege of crossing paths with many amazing individuals. One of those happened to be my “boss” of many years, Bruce Weaver. Rarely you cross paths with a person of such a kind heart who’s also committed to provide students not just great service, but an excellent academic experience full of kindness, respect, and compassion.

During my last week at work, Bruce wrote to me a very heartfelt letter that probably reflects more about who he is than about me. Without his permission, and because I’m probably the only one who reads my blog, I’m sharing his letter:

Thank you for all you have done for many years to make such a significant positive impact upon the lives of many people.

You have broad and deep knowledge of many subjects. It seems like a rare occasion when anyone would ask you a question for which you did not immediately know the answer. But on such rare occasions, you would seek out the information requested and return with an answer as soon as possible. People know they can always depend upon you and not be left wondering.

You have demonstrated sincere care for students. Whether meeting with a student one-to-one or making a presentation to a larger group, your commitment to equip and to encourage students has been steadfast.

You have served the needs of two institutions, both at the same time, for most of your years on the Newark campus. As all of us know, this is no small or ordinary task.

And you have been a great team player. Those closest to you have witnessed how you have been ready, willing, and able to work with us and with others.

And, while this goes beyond the scope of your job, it has been evident that you have deep commitment to your family as well. Your love for your family is not only in word, but in deed.

Over the many years you have been employed on the Newark campus, you have experienced numerous transitions. And it has not always been easy. But you have persisted in delivering excellent support every step of the way.

And now the time has come for you to move on to be a blessing to people in the context of the OSU Columbus campus. The opportunity which lies ahead of you cannot be fully understood at this time. But what can be known with certainty is that you will continue to make a significant impact upon the lives of many people.

It is difficult to say goodbye, because in our selfish way, we do not want to lose you. So, please permit us instead to say, “until we meet again.” Let us resolve to keep in touch as we move forward.

I conclude with some words from a song made popular many years ago by Roy Rogers:

“Some trails are happy ones,

Others are blue.

It’s the way you ride the trail that counts,

Here’s a happy one for you.

Happy trails to you,

Until we meet again.

Happy trails to you,

Keep smiling until then.”

-Bruce

Thank you, Bruce.
